Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD), also known as viral hemorrhagic disease (VHD), is a highly infectious and lethal form of viral hepatitis that affects European rabbits. Some viral strains also affect hares and cottontail rabbits. Mortality rates generally range from 70 to 100 percent
The newer viral strain RHDV2 was first detected in England and Wales in 2014 and soon spread to Scotland and Ireland. In 2010, a new virus variant called rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) emerged in France. RHDV2 has since spread from France to the rest of Europe, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. In the year 2020 shortly after covid-19 was announced this infectious disease has now hit American soil. With most infected cases on the west side of the country.
Please study the photo provided by the Texas animal health committee to view infected areas in Texas. This disease does not spread to humans or other animals. It is strictly a rabbit disease. But it will kill your furry friend and you're heard if proper biosecurity measures aren't taken.
The following actions will significantly reduce the chance of RHDV2 or other contagious diseases affecting rabbits:
1. Don't allow pet, feral, or wild rabbits to have contact with your rabbits or gain entry to the facility or home. If you own domestic rabbits, do not release them into the wild.
2. Do not allow visitors in rabbitries or let them handle pet rabbits without protective clothing (including coveralls, shoe covers, hair covering, and gloves).
3. Always wash hands with warm soapy water before entering your rabbit area, after removing protective clothing, and before leaving the rabbit area.
These biosecurity measures are mainly enforced with Rabbit Breeders. But if your pet rabbit shows any sign of being ill take it straight to the vet. Especially if your rabbit dies suddenly or unexpectedly in your care. Take your rabbit to a State Veterinary Clinic for testing.
As of April 2021, none of my rabbits have been affected by this disease. I would like to keep it that way.
1. Access to the rabbitry grounds is prohibited. All meetings will take place on public property.
2. The sale of live rabbits will be limited. Every animal that leaves my rabbitry will have passed their health screening. No transport options will be available. Please refrain from interacting with wild rabbits or disease-spreading animals before your meeting.
3. No outside rabbits will enter the rabbitry. As much as it pains me to say this, I cannot take in any rabbits because of this risk. Do not ask me to adopt your pet from you.
4. Rabbit shows are off-limits until stated otherwise. For more information on how the ARBA is combating the spread of RHDv2 please check out their website. Most of the security measures that are listed there I will also be performing with my own heart.
Brie's Bunny Barn is Certified by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA)!
Me and my family participate in many ARBA rabbit shows all over Texas. We have numerous show rabbits that have won many awards over the years. The main focus with my rabbits is to better their bloodlines as well as provide quality rabbits to FFA and 4H students just getting into the hobby. I did not have the best start when joining my FFA chapter, I had many failures and heartbreak and little to no guidance teaching me how to improve. Now, I strive to be the person that I wish I had met all those years ago assisting future FFA and 4-H students with their rabbit projects.
All of our rabbits are handled from the time they were born. Constant early interaction with people makes them less hand shy and skittish. We are in the rabbits’ life every step of the way, from birth to the time they leave us and beyond.
Our rabbits make excellent companions, as a pet or breeding animal. We look to place the right rabbit with the right person/family. Because we focus on Behavior above everything else, our Rex and Dutch rabbits for sale are of limited quantity. We are not always going to have rabbits for sale. The last thing we want to do is profit from these gorgeous animals.
